Walking Course

Situated in the northeast of Kyoto city, Iwakura and Shugakuin area offer quiet rural views surrounded by beautiful nature. In the old times, this area was an ideal place for emperors and artists to lead a tranquil and secluded life. We will visit temples located in the mountainous places to explore three distinctive gardens.

Entsuji temple features one of the finest Shakkei, or borrowed scenery, garden laid out by the Emperor Go-Mizuno in 17th century. You will find a masterful example of Karesansui, or dry landscape. Mt.Hiei looks located far from the garden but it is skillfully incorporated into the layout of the dry garden where hedges, shrubs and cedar trees are meticulously arranged.

Manshuin temple, a different style of Karesansui designed by Enshu Kobori, a feudal load in the Edo era, who was a notable artist. This temple used to be headed by priests of Imperial lineage in the past, its garden shows both Zen spiritualism and imperial or aristocratic tastes.

Enkoji temple offers a nice presentation of strolling garden where you follow a path around the garden to see a carefully composed landscape. This garden was named “garden of ten oxen”, inspired by Zen Buddhism episode of “ten oxen”. Ox is a symbol of enlightenment in Zen Buddhism, helping you reach calm and peaceful mind.
