In northern Kyoto, there are unique Karesansui gardens which are lesser known yet masterful pieces noteworthy.

 

Genkoan, Zen temple of the Soto sect, features a good representation of Karesansui. You will be overwhelmed by a beauty of colored leaves in autumn. You can appreciate the garden through the round and square windows, respectively called “the window of enlightenment” and “the window of illusion”.

 

Shodenji temple quietly standing in the mountain. The simple Karesansui garden where nicely trimmed azalea bushes are placed on raked white gravel is a perfect place for meditation. Mt Hiei can be viewed far behind the white wall of the garden that separates you from the world of everyday affairs.

 

Daisen-in temple is located in the Daitokuji Zen temple complex. Its small gravel garden with stone arrangement is striking and is highly appreciated by Japanese garden lovers, representing abstract essence of great nature such as mountain, rivers and sea. 

 

Itinerary:

Depart from the Kitaoji station → Head to Genkoan temple located in Takagamine area by city bus (approx. 10 minutes) →　Move to Shodenji temple situated in other side of the mountains by taxi (approx. 10 minutes) and a walk (approx. 10 minutes). This walk needs a little patience to climb the slope in the mountain. →　Last visit is Daisen-in temple by city bus (approx. 10 minutes). 

We will have 40-50 minutes to enjoy the gardens at the temples respectively.

This course ends at Daisen-in temple. You can catch buses at the bus stop nearby. Our guide will be happy to show you how to get your destination. 

 

*Note: There are slopes, staircases and stepping stones on the way and in the

  temples' precinct, so please wear appropriate shoes and clothing for walking.
