Walking Course

Kyoto is renowned for a wealth of traditional craftsmanship inherited for many years. This course focuses on Kyoto crafts such as lacquerware, metal crafts, cutlery, woodblock print and fans.

Lacquerware  Lacquerware is an exquisite art form in Japan. The deep, shiny luster of black and red lacquerware expresses Japanese beauty.

Metal crafts  Employing a variety of techniques, Kyoto has been producing high quality metal crafts including tableware, flower vase, accessories and tools for the tea ceremony.

Cutlery  Distinctive techniques for creating edged tools were developed to suit the needs of traditional Nishijin textile, Kyoto cuisine and Ikebana. Kyoto produces numerous cutting tools such as kitchen knives, scissors and specialist tools.

Woodblock Print  Woodblock print is a technique known for its use in the ukiyoe. The history dates back to the late Heian period when the method was used in printing Buddhist texts and images. In the Edo period, the technique evolved into the multicolored moku hanga using water-based inks.

Sensu and Uchiwa Kyo-sensu is indispensable tool for Japan’s traditional arts such as Noh, Kyogen, Japanese classical dance and the tea ceremony. Uchiwa or round fan is a traditional Japanese fan.
